The Männer-Turnverein Bremen — a men's gymnastics club — issued this note as emergency scrip (Notgeld), a phenomenon that swept Germany after 1914 when small-denomination coinage vanished from circulation almost overnight due to hoarding. Sports clubs, merchants, municipalities, and chambers of commerce all printed their own substitutes to make change. The M.T.V.B. was no exception, and the note was printed locally by G. Hunckel, who also designed it — a modest in-house production rather than a contract with one of the larger specialized Notgeld printers.
