The Liga zum Schutze der Deutschen Kultur — the League for the Protection of German Culture — was one of dozens of nationalist cultural organizations that proliferated in the early Weimar period, many of which issued their own emergency money as both a fundraising mechanism and a propaganda vehicle. This 1 Mark note is precisely that: a Notgeld issue that functioned less as a monetary instrument than as a printed pamphlet you could spend.
Max Eschle designed the piece; Ratsdruckerei R. Dulce in Glauchau handled the press work. Glauchau, a small Saxonian industrial town, had an active municipal printing infrastructure that took on considerable private Notgeld commissions during the 1921 inflation period.
