Obverse lettering 1 Mark / Landkreis Bochum / 1921
Reverse description The reverse carries validating text and conditions of issue in German, typical of Notgeld obligations of the Weimar inflation period, set in a plain typographic arrangement with a decorative border consistent with the obverse frame. A brief legal or redemption clause is presented in block letterpress, affirming the note's local circulation validity. The overall design is austere, relying on text-based composition without pictorial vignettes.

Landkreis Bochum — the rural district surrounding the city rather than the city itself — issued its own emergency currency in 1921 as the Weimar inflation crisis made Reichsmark coinage increasingly impractical. These Notgeld issues at the district level were common across the Ruhr, but the sheer administrative fragmentation of the period meant that neighboring jurisdictions were simultaneously running incompatible parallel currencies.

F. A. Gimmerthal operated out of Langendreer, at the time still a separate industrial municipality east of Bochum, absorbed into the city only in 1929.
