Karl, Duke of Södermanland, struck klippar — square or irregularly cut emergency-style coins — during his armed conflict with Sigismund III of Poland, who held the Swedish crown. The 1598 confrontation culminated at the Battle of Stångebro in September of that year, after which Sigismund was effectively expelled from Sweden. Karl ruled as regent and later as Karl IX, but in 1598 he was still technically a duke issuing coins under ducal authority rather than royal prerogative.
The klipp format was not purely emergency coinage here — it carried political weight, asserting fiscal and territorial autonomy during an active dynastic struggle.
