| Vorderseitenbeschreibung | Central full-colour vignette of the Erholungsheim Walsrode convalescent home in the Lüneburger Heide, rendered in a painterly Art Nouveau style, showing a multi-wing institutional building with red-tiled roofs set within landscaped grounds. The denomination '1 MARK' appears in white letterpress within purple decorative side panels, flanked by foliate Art Nouveau ornamental borders, with the Hamburg city arms at lower left and a stylised monogram cartouche at lower right. A text panel below the vignette records the history of the property, bears a facsimile signature, and states the validity expiry date of 30 April 1922. |

| Rückseitenbeschreibung | Central panoramic colour vignette of the Kloster Walsrode monastery complex viewed across open meadows and a small stream, with the church tower and convent rooftops rising above a perimeter wall amid surrounding trees, executed in a painterly Art Nouveau style. Purple decorative side columns with scrollwork frame the scene, while two white storks in flight occupy vignette cartouches in the upper corners. A text panel at the foot of the note provides a historical note on the monastery's foundation, with the printer's imprint of Hartung & Co., Hamburg at lower left. |

The Gewerkschaftsbund der Angestellten — the trade union federation for salaried white-collar employees — issued emergency currency during the acute small-change shortage of 1922, when hyperinflation was accelerating and official coinage had effectively vanished from circulation. The Gau Groß-Hamburg district organization was among dozens of regional bodies across Germany that stepped into the void left by the Reichsbank's inability to keep low-denomination notes in circulation long enough to matter.
Hartung & Co. were a Hamburg commercial printer, not a specialist security firm — an entirely normal choice for notgeld of this type, where speed and local availability mattered far more than anti-counterfeiting sophistication.
