The Darlehnskassen Ost were German military loan offices established in occupied Eastern territories during World War I, issuing their own currency to manage the economic extraction of resources from Poland, Lithuania, and the broader Ober Ost zone. These notes were deliberately kept separate from the Reichsmark system — the German high command did not want occupation-era inflation bleeding back into the domestic economy.
The 1 Mark denomination from 1918 sits at the tail end of the series, issued as German control over the East was already collapsing ahead of the November armistice. Notes from this final production run circulated only briefly before the political situation made them worthless.
