Christian V issued Norwegian coinage from Copenhagen, but the Christiania mint — operating intermittently and always underfunded — produced pattern strikes like this one largely to satisfy royal presentation requirements rather than circulation needs. Hede 18 is among the rarest documented Norwegian pattern pieces of the seventeenth century, with surviving examples numbering in the single digits across known collections. The Type III designation distinguishes it from two earlier die configurations used in the same year, differences detectable primarily in the crown punches above the shield.
