Christian V issued this mark coinage for Norway under the monetary reforms that followed Denmark-Norway's adoption of a new currency system in the 1670s and 1680s, an effort to standardize and stabilize exchange values across the dual monarchy. Norway at this point had no independent mint authority — the coins were struck at Christiania but answered entirely to Copenhagen's fiscal priorities.
The Rønning 122b designation points to a specific die variant within what is already a thinly populated type. Few examples survive in collectible condition.
