Was aber nun? Heinr. Rehmann, Buchdruckerei, Bockenem. |
| Reverse description | The reverse carries a full central vignette in polychrome letterpress illustrating the grave monument of Wilhelm Busch at Mechtshausen near Bockenem, enclosed by a wrought-iron fence, with tall conifers and foliage in the background against a pale sky. The denomination "Eine Mark" appears in a gold-yellow panel at the top in ornate Gothic blackletter, and a descriptive caption in the same yellow panel runs along the bottom. Corner ornaments in teal repeat the geometric cross motif of the obverse. |

Bockenem is a small town in Lower Saxony, and in the chaos of 1923 hyperinflation, even local print shops became de facto currency issuers. Buchdruckerei Heinrich Rehmann — a commercial printing house, not a financial institution — produced this notgeld out of practical necessity when Reichsbank notes became worthless faster than they could be distributed. The issuer and the printer are the same operation, which was not unusual for small-denomination emergency issues of this period but does mean quality control and authorisation were entirely local.
