Boldixum is one of several small parishes on the North Frisian island of Föhr that issued emergency porcelain coinage during the acute small-change shortage of 1920. The Meissen State Porcelain Manufactory produced the bulk of German porcelain notgeld during this period, though some issues were contracted through other firms. Föhr's geographic isolation — an island in the Wadden Sea accessible only by ferry — made the shortage particularly acute, and local municipal issues like this one filled gaps that mainland supply chains could not.
