Wyk auf Föhr is a small seaside resort town on the North Frisian island of Föhr, and this note is a piece of private Notgeld — emergency small-change scrip issued by a restaurant or wine cellar rather than any municipal or banking authority. The Altdeutscher Keller was a hospitality establishment, and its 1 Mark token would have circulated purely among its own clientele during the acute coin shortage years of the early 1920s.
