Iserlohn's 1921 notgeld issues belong to the dense wave of municipal emergency currency that flooded the Ruhr and Westphalia following the postwar coin shortage. Stadt Iserlohn had real industrial weight behind it — the city was a major center for wire and metal goods manufacture — but none of that affected the printing economics of small-denomination paper scrip, which was typically contracted to regional printers working under tight schedules and thin margins.
