Brakel is a small Westphalian town in the Höxter district, and like hundreds of similarly sized municipalities, its magistrate issued notgeld during the acute coin shortage that followed the First World War. The 1 Mark denomination places this squarely in the transitional phase of German emergency money — after the pfennig-denomination kleingeldscheine of 1916–1920 but before the hyperinflation-era großgeldscheine that would overwhelm the system by late 1922 and 1923.
The DeNG reference number suggests multiple varieties exist within this series, distinguished by serial number ranges, signature combinations, or minor typographic differences — the kind of distinctions that drove systematic Notgeld collectors to document every permutation.
