Iserlohn was a Westphalian industrial town with no particular claim to monetary history, but like hundreds of German municipalities in 1921, it issued its own Kleingeldscheine as the Reichsbank struggled to keep small-denomination coinage in circulation. The printer here, Albert Jess of Colmar, is the genuinely curious detail — Colmar had been returned to France under the Treaty of Versailles only two years earlier, after nearly five decades as part of the German Reich. A German city commissioning emergency currency from an Alsatian printer operating under French sovereignty, so soon after the border shift, speaks to how thoroughly pre-war commercial relationships outlasted the war itself.
