Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse is set against a wavy-line guilloche underprint on cream-toned paper, with a polychrome vignette at left illustrating a candlelit interior scene with an open window, books, and foliage — an artistic vignette characteristic of the Erzgebirge Notgeld series. The denomination '1 Mk.' appears in bold type within a wood-framed cartouche at upper right, while the central text block bears the issuer name and validity clause in period Gothic script. The date 'Ehrenfriedersdorf, 1. Aug. 1921' and the facsimile signature of the Bürgermeister appear at the lower right beneath the caption 'Der Stadtrat.'

Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse carries a full-width polychrome illustrative vignette occupying most of the note, rendered in an expressive, hand-drawn style evoking the miners' tradition of the Erzgebirge region: a group of miners in period dress are gathered around a coffin in a church interior, flanked by candles and a crucifix, with mourning figures at right. The denomination '1 Mk.' appears in bold type at lower left and lower right, flanking the inscription panel. Two lines of text at the foot of the note bear a miners' farewell motto.

Opmerkingen

Ehrenfriedersdorf, a small mining town in the Erzgebirge, issued its own emergency currency in 1921 as part of the broader Notgeld wave that swept German municipalities during the postwar coin shortage. Local councils were printing their own money by the tens of thousands at this point — some with civic pride, some out of sheer necessity, most both.

The Erzgebirge region had a long tradition of decorative craft printing, and many local Notgeld issues from this area were produced with that sensibility in mind. Whether this particular piece was locally printed in-house or contracted to a regional printer is worth confirming before attribution is finalized.
