Wiedenbrück is a small Westphalian town — today part of Rheda-Wiedenbrück — that issued this note during Germany's acute small-change shortage of the early 1920s, when municipal authorities across the country were legally permitted to print their own Notgeld to compensate for the disappearance of coin from circulation. The printer, Ad. Eßich & Co. of Oldenburg, handled a considerable volume of such municipal commissions from northwest German towns during this period.
