Vorderseitenbeschreibung Multicolour letterpress Notgeld note with a central vignette of Xanten Cathedral rendered in blue and grey tones, signed by the artist Heinz Schiestl in the lower right of the vignette. To the left stands a vignette of Saint Victor in bishop's vestments holding a cross, his name inscribed above in a dark panel; to the right appears Saint Helena with her attribute, her name similarly inscribed, both figures set against heraldic shields bearing the Xanten arms. The heading reads in Gothic blackletter 'Domschein der Siegfriedstadt Xanten' above a commemorative inscription referencing the re-founding of the Cathedral Association, with the validity clause and issuance date 'Xanten, 1. Okt. 1921' in the lower text panel.

Rückseitenbeschreibung The reverse centres on a bold silhouette vignette of Siegfried, the legendary hero of the Nibelungenlied, standing full-length with a sword in hand against a radiating sunburst background, with a small townscape of Xanten visible below. Flanking the central image are two text panels in red Gothic script quoting verses from the Nibelungenlied in Middle High German, evoking Siegfried's origins in the Lowlands and his connection to Xanten. The denomination '1 Mark' appears in shield cartouches at upper left and upper right, with Celtic knotwork corner ornaments and lateral vignettes of ravens and a castle tower in blue-grey tones.

Anmerkungen

Xanten's Domverein issued this 1921 Notgeld to raise funds for the restoration of the St. Viktor Cathedral, a common enough purpose among German church organizations during the notgeld years — but the involvement of Heinz Schiestl distinguishes it. Schiestl was a prolific ecclesiastical artist and book illustrator based in Würzburg, responsible for some of the more accomplished graphic work to appear on Notgeld issues of the period, and his commissions for church bodies were a natural extension of his broader career in religious imagery.

J. A. Schwarz of Lindenberg im Allgäu printed a substantial volume of collector-oriented Notgeld during 1920–1922, often to a higher production standard than municipal printers managed.
