Below the vignettes, an ornate cartouche with scrollwork frames the validity text and issue date, flanked on both sides by circular denomination medallions reading '1 Mp' in bold Gothic script. Eschershausen is a small town in Lower Saxony, and this note is a product of the notgeld fever that swept German municipalities in 1921 as postwar inflation began outpacing the Reichsbank's ability to supply small-denomination coinage. Cities, towns, and even individual businesses issued their own emergency fractional currency — some with genuine civic need, others frankly aimed at collectors willing to pay face value for pieces they'd never spend.
