Tonndorf-Lohe was a small suburban commune east of Hamburg that issued its own emergency paper money during the Kleingeldnot of the early Weimar years, when small-denomination coins had effectively vanished from daily commerce. This note is part of that broader Notgeld wave of 1921, when thousands of German municipalities printed their own scrip to keep local trade functioning.
O. Kurz as designer suggests local rather than commercial print-house production — a detail worth noting when assessing consistency across surviving examples from this issuer. The Gemeindevorsteher Flotow's signature authorizes the issue at the municipal level, with no involvement from a central banking authority.
Tonndorf-Lohe was incorporated into Hamburg in 1939.
