Ehrenfriedersdorf is a small mining town in the Erzgebirge, historically significant for tin extraction dating back to the medieval period. This 1 Mark note is a product of the Kleingeldschein emergency, the nationwide small-change shortage that hit German municipalities hard in 1921 as coin metal remained scarce following the war. Towns of this size issued their own notgeld not as a policy choice but out of necessity — the Reichsbank simply could not supply enough subsidiary coinage to keep local commerce moving.

Erzgebirge municipal notgeld from this period was produced by a range of local and regional printers, and quality varies considerably across the district.
