The central vignette presents a detailed illustration of the former high altar of Paderborn Cathedral (labelled 'DER FRÜHERE DOM HOCHALTAR'), rendered in gold and blue with flanking statuary and an elaborate Baroque canopy. The left panel carries the payment text of the Stadtsparkasse Paderborn in Gothic script, with the denomination 'Eine Mark' at the foot; the right panel bears the validity clause, the date '10. November 1921', the issuing authority 'Der Magistrat', and a facsimile signature. Paderborn's municipal savings bank issued this note during the acute small-change shortage that plagued German commerce in the early Weimar period, when silver and copper coinage had largely vanished from circulation. Stadtsparkasse issues of this type were redeemable only locally — a deliberate constraint that limited their liability while keeping petty transactions moving in the regional economy.
