Rothenburg ob der Tauber issued this 1 Mark note in 1921 as part of the widespread Notgeld phenomenon, when municipal and commercial entities across Germany stepped in to fill the void left by a federal currency system buckling under postwar inflation. The Stadtkasse — the municipal treasury — had direct authority to issue such instruments, giving this note a more official character than the decorative Serienscheine produced by many towns purely for collector sale.
A print run of over twelve million for a single small Bavarian town is striking. It reflects not collector demand but genuine transactional necessity — notes cycling through local commerce at a pace that wore them out quickly.
