Obverse description The obverse is divided into three vertical panels on a gold and blue ground. The central panel carries a large oval vignette with the elaborate polychrome coat of arms of the House of Hesse-Philippsthal, supported by two rampant gold lions and surmounted by a royal crown, set against a blue field with decorative scrollwork. The left panel bears a local arms in red and white with crossed hammers and the motto "Glück auf! / Hier wohnt ein rei Geschlecht", while the right panel displays a red cross on white with the motto "Standhaft und treu!"; both flanking panels carry the denomination "Eine Mark" in Gothic lettering at the top. Below the central vignette, the issuing authority is identified in ornate Fraktur script: "Philippsthal an der Werra / am 1. Oktober 1921 / Der Gemeindevorstand".
