Obverse description The municipal coat of arms of Castrop occupies the left portion of the note, rendered in colour with a blue field charged with two gold crossed keys beneath a crenellated tower, set against a fine hatched underprint ground. To the right, the denomination '1 Mark' appears in bold Gothic blackletter script, above which the issuing legend 'Gutschein der Stadt Castrop' is printed in matching typeface. The redemption notice and the facsimile signature of the Magistrate Wynen appear along the lower margin in a smaller cursive hand.

Reverse description The reverse carries a vignette of Heinrich Echterhoff, the legendary night watchman of Castrop, shown in period costume with a shining lantern and accompanied by a Spitz dog, blowing a watchman's horn against a dark atmospheric background. A multi-line verse in Gothic script runs across the upper and lower registers of the design, framing the central figure. The face value '1 Mark' is restated in the upper field alongside the Notgeld inscription.
(Translation: Emergency money of the city of Castrop 1 Mark. Heinrich in the gloom, with Spitz and sword, you proved yourself as guardian of Castrop. Rise from the grave and blow us back old cosiness and old happiness.)
