Paderborn's 1921 Notgeld series was among the thousands of municipal emergency issues that flooded Germany as coin shortages made small-denomination transactions impossible in the years following the First World War. The city contracted Gebrüder Parcus in Munich, a firm that handled a significant volume of Notgeld commissions during this period and produced work of consistently higher graphic quality than many municipal printers could manage locally.
The Michels design credit is relatively rare documentation for a Notgeld issue — most small-town emergency notes went to press without any named designer at all.
