Hohenwestedt is a small market town in Schleswig-Holstein, and like hundreds of similarly sized German municipalities in 1921, it issued its own emergency paper currency — Notgeld — to address the chronic small-denomination coin shortage that persisted well after the armistice. These local issues were sanctioned by necessity rather than any formal monetary authority, and the municipality's two signatories, Friedrich Senfin and Hans Martens, would have been local officials rather than banking professionals.
The DeNG reference places this within a well-documented series, suggesting at least two known signature or print variants exist for this denomination.
