| Beschrijving voorzijde | The obverse is divided into three vertical panels in a colourful letterpress design. The central panel bears the elaborate civic coat of arms of Fürstenwalde, consisting of a quartered shield with a black eagle and a red eagle on respective fields, surmounted by a mural crown and flanked by a stylised oak tree with spreading roots; two motto banners in red Gothic lettering appear at the upper left and upper right corners. The left circular vignette, set within a green laurel wreath with red floral accents, carries the Gothic text 'Gutschein der Stadt' on a black ground, while the right vignette mirrors this composition with the text 'Fürstenwalde Spree'. At the foot of the note a central text panel gives the legal tender clause signed by 'Der Magistrat', with the denomination '1 Mrk' repeated in green Gothic numerals at lower left and right, and the printer's imprint 'Druck: J. Oak-leaf and acorn motifs in brown and red frame the left and right margins, and the denomination 'Eine Mark' is printed vertically in large red Gothic script on each lateral border; a two-line descriptive caption in Gothic lettering runs across the lower margin. |

Fürstenwalde's 1921 Notgeld issue is one of thousands printed during the small-change crisis that gripped Germany after the First World War — coins hoarded, metal coinage effectively withdrawn from everyday use. J. A. Schwarz of Lindenberg im Allgäu was among the more prolific provincial printers of this period, supplying municipalities across Germany that lacked the resources or connections to approach larger commercial printers.
The town sits on the Spree, east of Berlin — the parenthetical clarification in the issuer name was there to distinguish it from other German Fürstenwaldes, a necessary precision on emergency scrip that had to circulate locally without confusion.
