Fürstenwalde an der Spree issued this Notgeld during the acute coin shortage that followed Germany's post-WWI economic dislocation — small denominations had effectively vanished from circulation as metal values outpaced face values and hoarding became endemic. Municipal authorities across the Reich filled the gap with locally sanctioned paper, and Fürstenwalde was among hundreds of towns that contracted out the work to specialist printers. J. A. Schwarz in Lindenberg im Allgäu was a prolific producer of such commissions, handling orders from municipalities scattered across Germany well beyond their immediate region.

The 1921 date places this note in the later phase of Serienscheine production, by which point collector demand had begun distorting print runs — some issues were pressed in quantities that never saw a cashier's drawer.
