Obverse description Yellow-ground notgeld voucher enclosed within a decorative border of stylised green foliage with black outer rule, the corners and sides accented by red, white and blue ribbon motifs evoking the German national colours. At upper left, the denomination '1 Mark' is set in bold gothic letterpress, flanked to the right by a multicolour quartered municipal coat of arms; below the arms, validity and redemption conditions are inscribed in two text columns with a cursive facsimile signature of the Gemeindevorsteher above the issue date '14. März 1920'. At the foot, the patriotic legend 'DEUTSCH GEBLIEBEN DURCH UNSERN WILLEN 1920' appears in bold display type, above a Low German verse beginning 'O WUNDERSCHÖNES ANGELLAND'.

Reverse description Cream-ground reverse printed in grey-green and black, enclosed by a bold black rule with red and white draped ribbon ornaments at the upper corners. The upper portion carries the denomination '1M' in large red script alongside the cursive title 'Gutschein der Gemeinde Holnis', beneath which a panoramic landscape vignette in fine line-engraving style presents a view across the Flensburg Fjord with rolling dunes in the foreground and the Danish ironclad Rolf Krake under steam and sail in the middle distance, captioned 'ROLF KRAKE AUF DER FLUCHT'. Across the lower margin a bold gothic inscription commemorates the 1864 recapture of the region — 'WIEDER DEUTSCH GEWORDEN DURCH UNSERE MACHT 1864' — with the printer's imprint 'Aug. Westphalen, Flensburg.' at the lower right.
