Obverse description The obverse is printed in grey-green and ochre tones, with a decorative chain border enclosing an orange header band bearing the issuer's title at top and denomination numeral '1' in corner cartouches. A central oval vignette presents a traditionally dressed peasant woman holding a sheaf of grain, set before a half-timbered Odenwald farmhouse, flanked by symmetrical arrangements of wheat ears, roses, and fruit in orange underprint. Redemption text in Gothic script flanks the vignette on either side, with the place and date 'Erbach i. Odw. im Nov. 1918' at centre-bottom, a facsimile signature to the lower right, and a circular heraldic lion watermark stamp to the lower left.

Comments

Erbach im Odenwald is a small administrative district in Hesse, and its Kreisausschuss — the elected county executive committee — issued this note as part of the vast wave of municipal and regional Notgeld that flooded Germany in 1918 as coin hoarding stripped small-denomination metal currency from everyday commerce. The county-level issuer rather than a town or savings bank makes this a slightly less common administrative type within the Notgeld collecting field.

The 1918 dating places it in the first, more practically motivated phase of German Notgeld — before the post-1920 novelty issues produced deliberately for collectors.
