Lippe was one of the smallest sovereign states in the German Empire — a principality of roughly 125,000 people — yet it maintained its own note-issuing apparatus through the Landesbank well into the First World War. This 1918 1 Mark piece belongs to the wave of Kleingeldersatz emergency issues that flooded Germany as coin metal was diverted to munitions and the Reichsbank's small-denomination circulation collapsed. Hundreds of German municipalities and minor states did the same, but Lippe's issues are distinguishable by their Detmold origin and the dual authority line naming both the Fürstliche Regierung and the Landesbank.
The principality ceased to exist in November 1918 when Prince Leopold IV abdicated following the revolution that ended the German monarchy.
