Obverse description The Hamburg city arms — a turreted castle gateway on a shield — displayed centrally, flanked by elaborate baroque scrollwork and supported by two rampant lions. Above the shield rises a crowned helmet with a spread-winged eagle as crest. The date is divided to either side of the shield (16 - 79), with the mintmaster's initials H·L below. At the base of the design, an orb bearing the value fraction I/3 is enclosed in a cartouche. The surrounding legend reads STADT·GELDT·HAMBURG.
