Additional information

Rudolph August ruled Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel from 1666 following his brother's abdication under pressure from the estates — an unusual succession that left him navigating a principality deeply indebted from the Thirty Years' War's long fiscal aftermath. The Mariengroschen was a workhorse denomination across the Lower Saxon Circle, and Brunswick mints struck enormous quantities to meet everyday transaction demand in a region where larger silver denominations were routinely hoarded or exported.

Welter 1866 encompasses a wide date range with multiple die marriages across this eighteen-year span.
