| Beschrijving keerzijde | Full-length standing figure of the Virgin Mary, crowned and nimbed, facing forward in flowing robes with elaborate drapery rendered in the late Gothic style. She holds the Christ Child on her left arm, the Child also crowned, while her right hand holds a sceptre. The figure occupies nearly the entire field, with the surrounding circular legend GA(V)(DE). DEI. GE - NI(T)(R)(X). MAR(I)(A). — an invocation hailing Mary as Mother of God — running in Latin within a rope-edged border. The devotional imagery is characteristic of Mariengroschen coinage issued by ecclesiastical authorities in the Westphalian region during the sixteenth century. |
