背面描述 The reverse presents a crowned standing figure of the Virgin Mary as Mater Salvatoris, depicted in full frontal view holding the Christ Child in her arms, set within a beaded inner circle. The figure is rendered in a simple but dignified Gothic style typical of Marian devotional imagery on 16th-century German municipal coinage. The surrounding circular legend reads MARIA MATER SALVATORIS, identifying the subject as Mary, Mother of the Saviour.

附加信息

Brunswick's civic coinage of this period occupied an uneasy political space — the city had formally adopted Lutheranism in 1529, provoking a prolonged conflict with its Catholic duke, Henry II, that would eventually result in imperial ban and military occupation. These Mariengroschen were struck under municipal authority precisely because that authority was contested; the city needed to assert financial independence while simultaneously funding its own defense.

The Mariengroschen denomination itself derived from the Marian groschen tradition of Lower Saxony, with Brunswick among the regional mints sustaining the type through the Reformation decades.
