| Beschrijving voorzijde | Two scuba divers depicted in mid-dive above a seabed with coral formations, rendered in relief against a smooth field. The numeral '1' appears prominently in the upper centre of the field, with the legend 'MARENGO' inscribed immediately below it. The legend 'ALGHERO' is arranged in large spaced letters around the upper and left periphery of the coin, referencing the Sardinian coastal city. The design celebrates the underwater tourism and marine heritage associated with Alghero. |

The Marengo was not an official Italian state currency but a privately issued silver trade token produced by the Alghero mint in Sardinia, circulating informally as a bullion-adjacent piece during decades when Italian monetary policy kept official silver coinage largely out of everyday commerce. Named after the Napoleonic gold coin of the same denomination, it traded on historical prestige rather than legal tender status.
