1 Maravedi - Felipe III monogram

Felipe III inherited a copper coinage system in crisis. The Spanish crown's chronic silver shortage — driven largely by the costs of maintaining the Army of Flanders and servicing mounting imperial debt — forced a dramatic expansion of vellón copper issues after 1599. The 1 maravedí was the smallest practical denomination in that system, and these tiny flans were struck with such minimal care that off-center strikes and weak impressions are the rule rather than the exception for the type.

A royal decree of 1602 doubled the face value of existing copper coins by royal fiat, creating immediate hoarding and market disruption throughout Castile.
