Struck to commemorate the FAO's campaign to improve global food production, this piece was part of a coordinated multinational issue in which dozens of countries released coins simultaneously in 1969 — one of the FAO's most ambitious numismatic programs. Lesotho had gained independence from British protection only two years earlier, in 1966, making this among the earliest gold issues from the newly sovereign state.
Mintages for Lesotho's FAO gold were extremely small, produced primarily for collectors and diplomatic presentation rather than any circulation purpose.
