| Reverse description | Reverse displays the elaborately detailed crowned Portuguese royal coat of arms of João, Prince Regent, centrally positioned and occupying most of the coin's field. The shield incorporates the traditional Portugese quintas (five escutcheons) and border of castles, surmounted by a royal crown of pronounced Baroque character. The peripheral legend IOANNES PORT P REGENS ET D GUINÆ encircles the design, identifying the issuer as João, Prince Regent of Portugal and Lord of Guinea. The relief is bold and well-defined, consistent with Lisbon Mint production of the early nineteenth century. |
