Seborga is a small town in Liguria that has claimed micronation status since Giorgio Carbone began asserting its medieval independence in the 1960s, basing the claim on an obscure 1729 land transaction. The "Principality" issues these luigini as novelty pieces with no legal tender status anywhere — the luigino itself is a historical denomination once struck for Seborga by the Savoys in the 17th century, which gives the modern issues their sole genuine numismatic hook.
Collector demand is driven almost entirely by the micronation curiosity market.
