Luigini — small silver coins nominally imitating French issues — flooded the Levant trade routes throughout the 1660s, where Ottoman merchants accepted them by weight rather than face value. Dozens of minor Italian lordships struck their own versions specifically for this export market, producing coins that never circulated domestically for a single day. Fosdinovo's Malaspina marquisate was among the smallest of these opportunistic mints.
The Ponzanello mint attribution distinguishes this piece from other Fosdinovo luigini struck under Maria Maddalena Centurione Malaspina's regency.
