Christiania issued its own currency sporadically from the 1970s onward, more as political statement than functional tender — the freetown has operated in open defiance of Danish authorities since its founding in 1971 on a former military base. Prince Henrik, the French-born consort of Queen Margrethe II, reportedly visited Christiania, an act that carried its own quiet irony given the commune's long-running standoff with the Danish state over legalization and property rights.
The X# prefix in the Standard Catalog denotes an unofficial or local issue, which is precisely what Christiania's coinage is — never legal tender, occasionally used within the community.
