Freetown Christiania — the self-declared autonomous commune occupying a former Danish military barracks in Copenhagen since 1971 — has issued its own coinage intermittently as an assertion of independence from the Danish state. The relationship between Christiania and the Danish government has been legally contentious for decades, with multiple eviction attempts and a 2011 partial resolution in which residents purchased portions of the land.
The "Løn" denomination exists nowhere in any national monetary system. It is Christiania's own unit, issued for ideological reasons rather than practical circulation.
