Christiania's internal currency has been issued sporadically since the 1970s, primarily as a statement of the community's self-declared independence from the Danish state rather than as a functional medium of exchange. The 2018 copper pieces were struck to mark the community's ongoing resistance following years of legal battles with the Danish government over property rights and the community's future — disputes that at one point came close to forcing the settlement's dissolution entirely.
