Freetown Christiania — the self-declared autonomous neighborhood established in Copenhagen in 1971 on the grounds of a former military barracks — has issued its own coinage intermittently since the 1970s, asserting symbolic independence from the Danish state. The Løn denomination is specific to Christiania's internal token economy, though these silver strikes are produced for collectors rather than street-level exchange. Denmark has tolerated the community's quasi-sovereignty under an uneasy legal arrangement formalized in 2011, when residents collectively purchased much of the land.
