Freetown Christiania, the self-declared autonomous neighborhood in Copenhagen, began issuing its own currency in the early 2000s as a deliberate assertion of independence from the Danish state — which had been attempting to normalize and eventually dismantle the community since its founding squatters occupied the former Bådsmandsstræde Barracks in 1971. The Løn series was intended for internal circulation among residents and sympathetic vendors within the commune's boundaries.

Denmark's government formally moved to close Christiania in 2002, the same year this piece was struck — making the currency partly political theater.
