Lithuania's litas was introduced in 1922 to replace the ostmark and stabilize a currency devastated by postwar inflation, and by 1936 the country was operating under Antanas Smetona's authoritarian presidency following his 1926 coup. The small silver content in this piece — half-silver by fineness — reflects interwar budget pressures on a young state still building its monetary infrastructure from scratch.
KM#76 is a short-lived type; Soviet occupation in 1940 ended litas coinage entirely for over fifty years.
