Obverse description Large frontal facing figure of the Lion of St. Mark, depicted with a prominent bearded human face, broad spread wings filling the field, and a closed gospel book held beneath the forepaws. The lion is rendered in high relief in a bold, archaic Venetian style. The circular Latin legend SANCTVS·MARCVS·VENETVS· runs along the outer border, separated from the central device by a beaded inner circle.
