Obverse description The first Coat of Arms of independent Malta occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield charged with the George Cross and vertical pales, supported on either side by two seahorses rampant. The shield is surmounted by a mural crown, and a scroll below bears the national motto 'VIRTUTE ET CONSTANTIA'. The legend 'MALTA' is inscribed in large, widely-spaced letters along the lower periphery.
