Sir Themistocles Zammit was the archaeologist who excavated Malta's Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum and the Tarxien temples in the early twentieth century, establishing the island's prehistoric past as one of the most significant in the Mediterranean world. This coin was issued as part of Malta's first commemorative silver series following independence from Britain in 1964, with the Central Bank selecting figures of national distinction rather than generic allegorical types.
The .987 fineness is notably high — purer than the sterling standard — a deliberate choice that distinguished these issues as collector pieces from the outset.
